My Letter to a Son

MY LETTER TO A SON

Yesterday as I was praying and thinking about the needs of each of the children, I had a great compulsion to write a short letter to one of my boys (12-year-old). I have found that between the ages of 12 to 14, boys need a passion and need something to work towards that truly brings fulfillment.

It seems that the girls grow up playing with dolls, make-believe school, cooking, pretending to or actually sweeping the floor, dusting, tending to clothes. These things come natural to them and they will continue doing these things as they grow old and have a home of their own.

Boys, on the other hand, play football, games, and even war (which they may engage in during their lifetime), but rarely play “practice” a career; therefore when they are growing out of that play stage, they are at a loss as to what to do with their time.

As long as the boys have been working alongside of their dad, they will continue to have “work,” but something seems missing. I have found this to be true with all 3 of my boys. I believe what is happening is that they are really seeking what the “CALL OF GOD” is or “WHAT THEIR PURPOSE IS” in this life. I feel that they need a little extra encouragement to keep DOING THE RIGHT THING as God unfold His plan for them.

If they can keep focused on the simplicity of the truth that God is calling us everyday to something and that in time, it all will unfold, it seems to take the pressure off of them to “know right now.”  As I wrote this 4 x 6 notecard for my son, it reminded me that I need to do this daily as I have challenged him. With all the decisions that we can make in life, sometimes it is easy to think, “Is this the right path?” or “Have I made the right decisions?” or “Am I going to make the right choices?” or “Am I going to miss what I am supposed to do?”

To me, there is a surefire way of knowing that you have been walking the path God intended, and I want to make that clear to my children so they do not waste any energy worrying about it. Here is the letter that I wrote to my son to hang on his bathroom mirror to read daily before he begins “life” every day.

I hope he reads this daily. It will make a big difference in the way that he chooses to go. I just love my boy so very much.

“To my Beloved Son,

God calls us everyday, not just once or twice in your life. Will you yield to God or to Yourself? It is your choice. Will you go down the narrow path or the one that most choose – the wide path, being led by their own desires (although when walking with God, you will desire what He desires – He puts those desires there for a reason).

God wants to fulfill the desires in you that are good. “…No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Psalms 84:11). If it is good for you, He will give it.

Make it your ambition to “Delight thyself also in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalms 37:4)

If you truly want to know the Call of God and want to accomplish it, ask yourself these questions:

1. Have I made up my mind to do what God says, no matter what the cost?

2. Am I faithfully reading His word and praying?

3. Am I obedient in what I know today of His will?

If your answer is yes to these questions, you will be in the will of God, fulfill the purposes of God that He planned for you before the beginning of the world, and have no worries that you have missed God’s Best for your life. The choice is yours.”

Good to hear from you Jody. Thanks so much. I need to write to the kids more often. It is hard to do with all that daily life brings. Hope to hear from you soon.
